Stephen Garvey Facing Criminal Charges

$
0
0
Garvey has been a figure we have been following since his time harassing students at a Red Deer high school along with members of the hate group World Wide Coalition Against Islam (thought they later had a falling out). He is also the leader of a far-right fringe political party which that focuses primarily on immigration:

Despite his rhetoric he doesn't like being called out as a racist:

Despite residing in Calgary, Garvey is running for a seat in Nova Scotia where he has made frequent trips and where he and supporters were caught assaulting a counter-protester:

He's also claims to be fighting against corruption!

I suppose that should read corruption he doesn't engage in:

The leader of a controversial political party is facing both criminal charges and charges under the Canada Elections Act.
Stephen Garvey, the leader of the far-right National Citizens Alliance (formerly the National Advancement Part of Canada), was charged in June in the Provincial Court of Alberta in Calgary.
Garvey is charged with circumventing election contribution limits by approximately $26,000.
He's also charged with knowingly providing the chief electoral officer with false documents relating to his party's status, leading to two criminal code charges for forgery.
Yeah, life comes at you hard sometimes.

Meet Cpl Patrik Mathews, Winnipeg Recruiter For Violent Hate Group The Base

$

Ryan Thorpe has published the name of the individual responsible for the posters found in Winnipeg recruiting people to join The Base, a secretive and violent hate group with links to Atomwaffen Division:

The individual discussed in the story has shut down his Facebook profile.... but he wasn't fast enough:

Meet Cpl. Patrik Mathews, working out of the Minto and McGregor armouries in Winnipeg:
Mathews is a trained combat engineer, which makes him an explosives expert, and is an active member of the army reserve. Combat engineers are responsible for conducting a number of construction and demolition tasks under battle conditions.
As a master corporal, he is considered to be in a leadership position and oversees and instructs privates who work under him.

Before he shut it down ARC was able to do a bit of a deep dive into his Facebook profile finding a few interesting things.

For example, seems Mathews is a supporter of Donald Trump and Bernier's PPC:

He is also a fan of Fireforce Ventures, an online store glorifying the apartheid state of Rhodesia profiled by Ricochet which had active CF members engaged in racist banter (and which one Keean Bexte, now a "Rebel Media" personality was involved with):

We also found something that turned out to be rather ironic.

Two days ago we mentioned that Mathews had a number of Twitter accounts and discussed one of those accounts, The Sober Philosopher, in some detail. A second account, PunishedPhilosopher, was used also used to harass antifascists:

He also made similar threats of violence:

However it is this one that jumped out for me:

It jumped out because it seems that Mathews didn't always feel this way:

First, she could (and hopefully has) done better.

Second, I wonder if Mathews told other members of The Base that he was at one time romantically involved with a woman of colour?

I end this by noting that hate groups like Atomwaffen, The Base, and others like them like to believe they act in a cloak of anonymity. That they can plan, encourage, and (in some cases) commit acts of violence without being concerned about the consequences feeling they are untouchable while trying to create a climate of fear for those they deem as the enemy.

The anonymity of at least this member lasted a little over two weeks, and while we are still looking for the person putting up The Base posters in Saskatchewan who is also rumored to be a CF employee, that person should probably be very, very, worried right about now.

For anyone else considering joining groups like this, this should give you some pause for thought.

Meet A PPC Candidate: People on Social Assistance Should Be Denied Voting Rights

So for a change of pace here's a story that isn't connected to a nihilistic racist death cult.... so far as I know at least.

PressProgress picked up ARC's story on the scuffle between white nationalist Derek Harrison who shoved the nearly 70 year old anti-Muslim conspiracy promoter Tarek Fatah who then proceeded to swat Harrison with his cane. It was an incident where no one came across looking good but I have to say that if you're a man in his later 30s or early 40s and you shove a septuagenarian in almost any context, you're really the asshole.

Derek doesn't seem to feel the same way as he responds to the PressProgress story by accusing Fatah of being a communist and suggesting he go back to his "shit hole country":

I included my own editorializing.

The incident occurred at the PPC meeting where Bernier unveiled his immigration platform such that it is. Harrison himself has become a rather big booster for the PPC and might even be credited with finding them a candidate.

With that in mind, meet Kelly Day:

Day claims to be a former leftist who "walked away" from the ideology. She has also been boosted by the likes of Ezra Levant's "Rebel Media":

Perhaps her most high profile engagement was performing in the UK for football hooligan Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, a man convicted of multiple crimes including numerous assaults, using a false passport (he was trying to enter the United States where he was banned for drug offenses), and mortgage fraud; he's currently serving time after being convicted for breach of the peace and contempt of court. He also has a history with the BNP:

But hey, he hates Muslims so Ezra and company are happy to overlook these character flaws. Here Harrison introduces a video in which Day performing what appears to be the song "Hallelujah" for Yaxley-Lennon but with the lyrics significantly changed:

Leonard Cohen would not approve.

She has also promoted the views of self-styled counter-terrorism Tom Quiggin whose expertise and credentials have been called into question; his primary claim to being an expert on the subject is that he appeared before a parliamentary committee along other "experts" on Islamic extremism as (ironically) Tarek Fatah:

So of course, Kelly Day is a perfect PPC candidate!

Accepted AND vetted, eh?

Soooo, are the folks in the PPC aware that she agrees people on social assistance shouldn't be allowed to vote?

Your Ward News Sentencing Update: One Down. One to Go.

As the sentencing hearing for Your Ward News editor, James Sears, and publisher, LeRoy St. Germaine, resumed this afternoon, I started taking bets with friends about whether it would drag on longer. It was clear after my last post that Paul Fromm, if no one else, maintained his enthusiasm and I felt like this case was not done yet.

My personal bet was that St. Germaine would be sentenced today and that the Sears grandstanding circus would continue.

I was completely wrong.

In deciding that Sears could not reopen the case, Justice Blouin not only put an end to Sears' shenanigans, but also cleared his lawyer, Dean Embry, of any wrongdoing. He clearly stated that "Mr. Embry approached the case tactically and professionally. This was not incompetence or worse. This was a lawyer doing his job. It just didn't work."

In sentencing, Blouin did not mince words. He stated that “any position communicated that essentially denies that an entire half of the world's population are human beings is so outrageously reprehensible that the word ‘hate’ is starkly inadequate." He went on to explicitly make the important link between online/printed hate and extremist violence when he added, "Mr. Sears...promoted hate to a vast audience in an era where online exposure to this material inexorably leads to extremism and the potential for mass casualties."

In his Reasons for Sentence, which can be read in its entirety at the end of this piece, he concluded:

Looking at the appropriate sentence through the lens of fundamental principle of sentencing in s 718.1 (that is the gravity of the offence and the degree of responsibility of the offender), my view is that both counts should attract an 18-month jail term. Obviously, as indicated above, the procedural maximum sentence I am permitted to impose is one of six months on each count (consecutive). Accordingly, Mr. Sears will be incarcerated for one year."

This declaration caused emotional responses from some of the fash who, according to sources, were out in force to support Sears and St. Germaine. Thanks to some great reporting from Adrian Ghobrial, we've been able to piece together some of the aftermath. First, a woman started ugly crying saying "that's not right" and ran from the room.

This woman, apparently, wasn't Sears' wife. Said wife brought their young son up to say goodbye and collected Sears' personal effects, except for one important item he decided to keep with him.

From what I understand, he opted not to hug his family before being put in cuffs. As he was led away, he simply said "see you guys."

While I imagine this was a relief for many of those in attendance, I am somewhat disappointed that we will now never see the "impressive list" of expert witnesses Sears and Fromm were working on. The ironic thing is, since Sears fired his lawyer and created all this extra work for his friends and the court, he may now have to do a lot of extra work himself while he attempts to navigate the process for requesting an appeal, and possibly bail pending said appeal, which seems fitting, really.

There was one small victory for Sears, however. The Crown had requested that as part of his probation he be prohibited from writing or publishing anything for three years. Blouin agreed with Embry's assertion that that was too broad, saying that he was entitled to his free speech rights and that he was free to publish anything he wants, "even if unpopular and objectionable, as long as his words do not offend the Criminal Code." It will be interesting to see what, if anything, Sears feels inclined to publish in the future.

In the matter of LeRoy St. Germaine, Blouin indicated that since the sentencing circle option did not work out, he would need more time to prepare to for his sentencing. Court will resume August 29th for St. Germaine.

One down. One to go.

Anna Slatz of "The Post Millennial" Once Ran Uncritical Profile of Self-professed Nazi as Editor of a New Brunswick University Student News Paper

When it comes to right-wing media in Canada "The Post Millennial" has become an increasingly important source cited by conservative politicians, conservative pundits, your angry uncle insisting taxation is theft during Thanksgiving dinner, the lady who shows up to Parliament Hill at 1:00 am to scream at tourists about chem trails, and the numerous online sites this blog monitors. Although touting itself as a news source, the reality seems to be that it is by and large a propaganda network that helps to promote conspiracy theories and right wing talking points.

On August 22 Emma McIntosh of "The National Observer" (click here to support them financially) published a story that profiles the editor of "The Post Millennial" Cosmin Dzsurdzsa who readers might know best as Lindsay Shepherd's boo:

In the article McIntosh traced Dzsurdzsa's career working for a pro-Putin "Russian Insider" and before then as a creative director and correspondent with "Free Bird Media" which some people may have first heard about regarding a controversy involving an Ontario Progressive Conservative candidate:

ARC has discussed FBM a number of times, though my personal favourite article was the pissing match between Ronny Cameron and FBM's Alex Van Hamme:
Anti-Racist Canada, putting the "c" in classy headlines since 2007.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Dzsurdzsa deigned to turn his eye toward this lil' blog on the Interweb on at least one occasion:

I feel seen!

But at the same time Emma McIntosh was looking into Cosmin Dzsurdzsa, ARC happened to be looking at another figure within "The Post Millennial" universe:

Anna Slatz has been writing for "The Post Millennial" for 7 months. Though she suggests her politics run to the left, her articles seemed focused on critiquing progressive activists, politicians, and academics as well her more recent preoccupation with the very troubled (and perhaps mentally ill) Jessica Yaniv. Slatz was also the writer who promoted the conspiracy theory that the Talya Davidson story, which ARC commented on last week, was a Liberal plot to damage the Conservative Party prior to the election:

More recently Slatz was in Portland, Oregon ostensibly to report on the Patriot Prayer protest and massive counter-protest pushing the narrative that "antifa" were a violent and uncontrollable mob, a narrative that Andy Ngo certainly approved of:

That being said we've know Ngo to play fast and loose with the truth so.... maybe take his praise with a grain of salt?

It is prior to Slatz's involvement with "The Post Millennial" that is of interest to this writer however:

Michael Thurlow is a spectacularly marginal figure even for the far right in Canada. ARC has only written about him once and that was in relation to.... wait for it.... a pissing match with Kevin "No Show" Goudreau (see a pattern here folks?).  However there was a moment in early 2018 when Thurlow's National Socialist Labour Revival Party made the mainstream news:

Don't worry though. Thurlow isn't a Nazi according to Jonathan Kay:

Except that he is TOTALLY a Nazi:

Thurlow also got him some love from now former Acadia University professor Rick Mehta:

It is at this point that Anna Slatz, who once went by the name Anna de Luca, comes in. At the time Thurlow's flyers were being posted around the UNB campus, Slatz was the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, "The Baron" which is a position she appears to have held for less than a month by that point. In that position, Slatz published an op-ed by Thurlow as well as an uncritical interview where none of his racist statements were challenged.

A Yellow Vester, a Hatriot, and a Neo-Nazi Walk Into a Bar...

$

...Not really, but they did go live on Facebook.

Shortly after Your Ward News editor James Sears was sentenced to one year in prison for his role in distributing the virulently antisemitic, misogynistic, and homophobic hate rag, Derek Storie of the Yellow Vests and Ed Jamnisek of Northern Guard thought interviewing neo-naziPaul Fromm would be a good use of their time.

Nice of Ed to brush his hair for the occasion.

The three chatted about all sorts of "patriotic" things, like how you can't be antisemitic anymore:

Fromm's opinion that Maxime Bernier's Peoples' Party of Canada will get rid of hate speech laws:

Given Fromm's support for the PPC platform, the fact he thinks this will actually happen isn't surprising.

Fromm even went as far as to use standard white nationalist talking points, reiterated by Jamnisek who complains "if you're questioning who rules you, who can you not criticize?"

Also of interest here is Storie including himself when referencing their belief that "white people are outnumbered," given that he repeatedly claims to be indigenous, stated he was Metis earlier in the video, and insists that his vlogging under the name "Noble Savages" is a reference to his heritage.

Anyway, they continue on with Ed asking if civil war is imminent. Fromm is careful with what he says, but does express a lot of support for the Yellow Vests:

Poor Paulie

That said, he certainly has participated in Yellow Vest rallies before, but has reportedly been asked to stop coming around, since we covered it.

Paul Fromm with Hamilton Yellow Vest organizer Justin Long, earlier this year.

Fromm insists "we are at war," and is confident that such "free speech advocates" as himself would be thrown into a gulag or camp. We can think of a few places Fromm can go, but it's neither of those. We'll leave such monstrous ideas to those who pal around with Blood and Honour, Combat 18, and the Aryan Guard

Derek Storie is still somehow not aware of Paul Fromm's affiliations, or the affiliations of those he spends time with, such as the Canadian Nationalist Party

About that...

Who's going to tell Derek?

Ed provides an extremely watered down primer on who Paul Fromm is, including the indication that he's somehow NOT a holocaust denier:

Huh...

I suppose we can't blame Ed, given Paulie's very convincing attempts to portray himself as a run-of-the-mill free speech dude.

I can't imagine where we'd get that idea.

We leave you with not a nazi or a holocaust denier (heh) but definitely a very large baby Paul Fromm's thoughts on the sentence:

Sure, Paulie.

The Mess That Is Hamilton

$

The Canadian Yellow Vest members in the Hamilton area continue to hold their Saturday rallies and they've been as wacky as anything YVC has organized so far.

On August 10th Yellow Vest and very troubled man Martin Brousseau drove his destined-for-the-scrap-heap bus onto the sidewalk towards counter protesters. Dubbed the "Hate Bus" by anti-racist and antifascist counter protesters, Hamilton police officers negotiated with Brousseau to move the bus for a reported 30 minutes before he finally moved that dilapidated piece of shit.

We've covered Brousseau previously:
However, even we were surprised at his boldness, given that he brought gear to detain people with and told the Hamilton cops he would do so, with anyone he deemed causing trouble.
After the Hamilton police managed to politely convince Brousseau to move the Hate Bus, they arrested a counter protester, claiming they had made a "disturbance." They now face charges of resisting arrest for an arrest which was completely unwarranted to begin with.

This also emboldened the yellow vest crowd, resulting in a truly disgusting display:
In attendance at the Hamilton rallies is a woman, who according to Brousseau's videos is Ukrainian, that goes by the first name Lily/Lilia. She has been spotted throwing roman salutes the week before, regularly sports Canadian Nationalist Party apparel, and engages in hate speech and violence. She attends other far-right events, including C3 in Ottawa and PEGIDA in Toronto.
Justin Long has attempted to denounce Lily, however considering his willingness to ally himself with other nazis such as Paul Fromm and Kevin Goudreau I don't see what the point is.

"Jack Smith"/Confederate Shirt Guy was also there.
Also confirmed in attendance has been Duke Willis:
The Hamilton yellow vest rallies have been problematic for some time, particularly with the violent attack on Hamilton Pride. That being said, counter-demonstrations have been growing and now completely dwarf the Yellow Vests. Interestingly, Duke Willis has put forth a strategy for sidewalk protests instead of rallies in order to avoid  counter protests.
I'm taking that as a sign that their rallies in Hamilton are floundering. The Yellow Vest movement has been fading away across the country, but their associated hate groups are still around and we'll continue to document the hate and violence from them.

Man Convicted of Attempting to Burn Down Mosque Connected To Yellow Vests Canada

It seems fitting that almost immediately after we write about the current situation regarding the Yellow Vests in Hamilton we identify a person of serious interest within their ranks.

On September 14, 2017, Keith Frederick, of Hamilton ON, attempted to burn down the Ibrahim Jam-E Mosque.

From Vice Canada:
On Sept 14, just before midnight, Keith Frederick rummaged through the trash behind a Hamilton mosque until he found something flammable. With the objects in hand he walked to Ibrahim Jam-E Mosque, dropped them in front of the door, took a knee and lit them.
This was how he was going to, as he texted his uncle weeks earlier, "bring his own jihad to those camel fuckers."
The trash ignited in a ball of flames. With that, the 34-year-old man turned and walked away, seemingly unaware that all of this was caught on the mosque's security camera. Soon after the fire started, a newly-arrived group of Syrian refugees saw the flames and called police. Frederick was arrested moments later.
While the damage was minor, this was clearly a crime of intent, and Frederick was subsequently sentenced to 25 months in prison, less time served for his crime.

Since his release, Frederick's Facebook feed has been littered with the usual Islamophobia we see from these people, and it seems he hasn't reformed his ways.

It should come as a shock to absolutely no one to discover that Frederick is now a very active member of one of the largest Yellow Vests groups on Facebook - Yellow Vest Rebellion - where he frequently participates in thread discussions:

In addition to contributing to the discussion, he often shares content from the group to his own feed:

This is not the first arson attack on a mosque in Canada within the last few years. On June 16, 2018 the Edson Islamic Centre was lit ablaze, with three people praying inside it.

Additionally, this is not the first individual with a criminal history related to their activism that we've identified within Yellow Vests Canada. The movement continues to prove that it is a breeding ground for radicalization and hate, and it is being suggested as a "gateway" by the likes of ex-Canadian Nazi Party/current British People's League leader, John Beattie:

While we don't recognize him from attending rallies, folks in Hamilton should be on the lookout given Frederick's history.

Far Right Infighting Part ∞ + 1: Alberta Northern Guard Split

This is late in coming not because ARC wasn't following it practically in real time but because we wanted to see where it was going. We do however have to thank the folks with Edmonton Against Fascism for covering this from the start and keeping us up to date.

Oh, let's not get ahead of ourselves. We'll get to Kyle Sizler in just a moment.

A few months ago there was a changing of the guard in the Alberta Northern.... er.... Guard.

This past spring Jeremy Clark appears to have left his position as head of the Alberta Northern Guard which allowed Kyle Puchalski taking over:

Prior to this he had been in a leadership position in Calgary were he and his fellow boneheads I mean Northern Guard members as well as Calgary Soldiers of Odin members participated in a few patrols of the city which, if we're being really honest, amounted to preening and strutting in areas of well lit and relative low crime while another member took pictures of them:

The guy sporting the Northern Guard emblazoned leather vest and the yellow hoodie is fashion icon Kyle Silzer seen here in one of his more contemplative moments:

Silzer also became a member of the Northern Guard around spring time. He referred to the hate group as his "new family" and was welcomed with open arms by Puchalski:

Awww! They even included heart emojis!

So when it was time for the new provincial head of the NG to appoint individuals to leadership positions, Silzer was one of the first who was picked:

Yeah.... you ALL already know where this is going:

Former leader of the National Alliance, at one time the largest hate group in the United States, now a PPC activist in Ontario.

$

I'm not sure I can articulate how big a deal this is. The National Alliance was founded by William Pierce and under his leadership became the largest hate group in the United States. He is also infamous for having written The Turner Diaries which depicts a violent revolution in the United States which ultimately leads to the extermination of non-white and Jewish Americans; ultimately the genocide of non-Europeans and Jews is extended worldwide by the new racist American government. This novel was used by the terrorist group The Order, Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, and a host of others who have used the novel as inspiration for their murders.

After Pierce's death the National Alliance began to collapse. Erich Gliebe would succeed Pierce and after his resignation Shaun Walker briefly assumed leadership in part as a result of Kevin Strom's efforts to take over the group (Strom would later be convicted on child pornography charges):
In June of 2006, however, Walker's past caught up with him. He was arrested on federal civil rights charges for allegedly leading a series of organized attacks on Mexicans and Native Americans in Salt Lake City bars in 2002 and 2003. The conditions of his pre-trial release prohibited Walker from having any contact with past or present members of the National Alliance, forcing him to resign as chairman and hand the reins back to Gliebe. Walker and two co-defendants, Travis Massey, the former Utah spokesman for the Alliance, and Eric Egbert, were convicted in April 2007 of conspiracy to interfere with the civil rights of individuals based on their race. On Aug. 13, 2007, Walker was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison. He later won a sentence reduction and was released on Nov. 27, 2009.
Walker now appears to be living in Ontario and is a member of the Peoples' Party of Canada led Max Bernier.

Thank you to Atlanta Antifascists for all the hard work they did digging up this information:

YWN Sentencing Update: St. Germaine gets 1 year House Arrest, Sears out on Bail

$
0
0
After James Sears was led away in handcuffs last week, the sentencing of LeRoy St. Germaine to one year house arrest for promoting hatred against women and Jews is anti-climactic at best. While he received the maximum one year penalty (6 months/count), he avoided jail time because, according to Justice Blouin, his Indigenous heritage and poor health (heart and lung problems) needed to be taken into account. He added that "although Mr. St. Germaine was aware of the content of Your Ward News as edited by Sears, there is no evidence he created any of it.” St. Germaine also expressed regret about the direction the paper took after Sears came on board. Previously it went after "dirty politicians" and St. Germaine said he would like that to become the focus once again.

While I appreciate the validity of some of the mitigating factors in this case, I don't believe justice was served in deciding St. Germaine should avoid jail time altogether. His lack of respect for Your Ward News' victims is striking. When offered the option of a sentencing circle, he declined because he did not want to apologize. Outside of court today, when asked what he would say to his victims, he stated they should "suck it up and get over it."

Then, of course, likening Sears to Christ and saying the paper will be back blows any assertion of St. Germaine's regret or desire to distance himself from Sears out of the water:

And while St. Germaine evidently didn't write any of the hateful material that's in violation of S319(2) of the criminal code, as publisher, he had the final say in whether to print those words and images. I believe that responsibility should carry more weight in Justice Blouin's courtroom.

As St. Germaine begins organizing his appeal, Sears' is already underway and he is out on a mere $500 bail. His bail conditions include taking Your Ward News offline, refraining from contacting any of his victims, and, the most challenging for Sears, not making any public statements. His new lawyer, criminal defence attorney Ian McCuaig, will have quite the challenge in convincing the court that Sears' conviction and sentence was arbitrary, politically motivated, and "too harsh."

At the time of writing, it is unknown whether Sears and St. Germaine's appeals will be heard together or when the appeals will begin. However, it is clear that for their victims, closure is still months away.

Hate Groups Partied "For the Vets" In Failed PR Attempt

$

0
On Saturday a variety of hate groups (Yellow Vests Canada, Northern Guard, Proud Boys, C3) organized and attended the "Canada's Patriot Party" in Estevan, Saskatchewan, a fundraiser for vets an attempt to generate positive PR and disguise their hate by donating funds from the concert to VETS Canada, a non-profit which helps homeless and at-risk vets.

The concert was organized by Jayme Knyx, a business owner and lousy musician who is a notable member of the Yellow Vests movement, and who was previously involved with Rollin with Pat and Jay.

Jay Riedel, a Yellow Vests organizer based in Estevan, and previously the Jay of Rollin with Pat and Jay, was also involved in organizing the event.

On the week of the concert we tweeted to VETS Canada to let them know who was organizing on their behalf.

Later that day, VETS Canada pulled their association with Jayme Knyx and the Patriot Party. Needless to say Knyx was not very happy about this. In response, he says that they "have now started litigations <sic> against the individuals we know are responsible," and directs his followers to harass the co-founder of VETS Canada.

Given their actions, it should be painfully obvious that helping veterans was secondary to the attempt at cleansing their rotten image.

I would also like to note that Jayme set up a GoFundMe campaign without the permission of VETS Canada, a move completely unnecessary since you can donate to them right at their website. The campaign ended once it was mentioned to VETS Canada.

This behaviour from far right hate groups is typical. In July we shut down a concert organized by former Northern Guard leader Eric Brazeau, which also used the vets as a shield.

Notable figures in attendance at Mullet Fest:
I can't imagine why VETS Canada didn't want anything to do with these people.

It's truly a mystery.

I guess we'll never know.

From what we can tell it was attended by between 50-100 people, many wearing yellow vests.

We started going through some of the live streams of the music and speeches, but it goes for hours and, quite frankly, these people are boring and untalented.

Oh, but I can't forget that they were selling shitty merchandise, you know because something something veterans.

We would also like to add that if you can, please donate to VETS Canada. They actually DO help vets, courageously said no to hate, and they certainly don't deserve to be harassed by so-called 'patriots' hatriots.

Labour Day Weekend 2019 Bits and Bites: Yellow Vests, Proud Boys, PEGIDA, ID Canada

Racists apparently don't take long weekends off, and neither do we.

PEGIDA held their monthly hate-rally in Toronto, and it was decidedly quieter than usual.

This thread, in particular, courtesy of Twitter user and photographer du(ali)ty is fantastic:

As quiet as it was, there was reason for concern:

As usual, reports state that the counter-protest easily dwarfed the 8 or so PEGIDA members. More of this, forever.

PEGIDA also had a "flash" rally in London, ON on August 28:

Moving on, Derek Storie spent time this week bumming bus fare and hitching rides to the hatriot filled and poorly attended Canadians Patriot Party

En route to Estevan, he stopped in Winnipeg and hung out with Proud Boy Todd McDougall of Winnipeg Alternative Media. Our friends at FF1 were quick to put notice out to the city:

Storie and McDougall decided it was a good idea to harass a Winnipeg-based antifascist organizer and founder of FF1 at his business.

We have no idea why they uploaded this, since it makes them look like absolute chumps.

There's also CCTV footage of the incident:

According to Kinnarath:
They entered my place of business clearly intoxicated. I asked them to leave. As you can see by the by the video, they refused. It was not my desire to engage or do business with them, so I used the shopping mall's safety protocol by calling mall security to have them removed.
McDougall regularly rails against Kinnarath and the fine folks of FF1.  We're sure this stunt won't endear Todd to the Winnipeg antifascist community.

Moving further west, ID Canada posters were spotted in Saskatoon:

Back in Ontario, Paul Fromm and Lisa Thompson (Yellow Vests Canada) have both applied to speak to Hamilton City Hall.

Fromm wants to address "free expression," while Thompson is concerned about YVC optics.

That will be interesting, given what an absolute cesspool Hamilton has been lately

Also in Hamilton, the weekly YVC rally was pretty quiet, presumably because so many of them went to Mullet Fest.

I think this is going to end up being a different article than readers might be used to. So before I start I'm going to include some links. If you think someone you love is or is at risk of being radicalized by extremist propaganda or you yourself have fallen down an alt-right (or any other form of extremism) rabbit hole and are looking to get out, please look to the following for help (I'll add more links as I become aware of them):
I also contacted Mubin Shaikh about this article. He wrote this:
Actual deradicalization programs are still lacking but the best folks who do this stuff are former NeoNazis. One guy who is super awesome is Arno Michaelis who teamed up with Pardeep Kaleka after the latter's father was killed in a NeoNazi attack on their Sikh Temple.
Some others out there by name who I think should be mentioned are:
In covering radicalization that applies to any and all groups:
*    *    *

The last few weeks have been very busy personally, professionally, and in terms of keeping up with what actions of the groups and individuals ARC keeps an eye on. In fact I haven't even had time to personally focus on some of the more events that occurred this month such as the Pegida Canada rally that took place in Toronto on Saturday (there wasn't much to it) or the rally in Estevan, SK attended by Yellow Vesters, Northern Guard members, and Canadian Combat Coalition members, though our friends YVCE has that covered on their Twitter account and very kindly covered this and other stories on the blog (read the entire thread):

As I sit here in my basement (which I stress once again is in a home I own and which has a library, a fireplace, and a bar and is awesome) beer in hand though, I find myself with time to think and have been reflecting on the topic of radicalization and the path that people take towards extremism.

Yeah, not exactly a cheery subject, eh?

As of the writing of this article Patrik Mathews, the Base recruiter who was profiled by journalist Ryan Thorpe, has gone missing after his dismissal from the military. Despite being part of a hate group planning a race war in which non-whites, Jews, and Muslims would be exterminated, Tim "Braying Jackass" Kelly of the Proud Boys knows who the real victim is:

We also learned this week that the Canadian Nationalist Party led by Travis Patron who is as an overt antisemite apparently now has the signatures needed to be registered as an official party and while we certainly don't expect them to win anything we do see the danger of normalizing racist, anti-LGBTQ, antisemitic, and Islamophobic rhetoric in the political sphere.... which if we're going to be honest is a market many PPC candidates already seemed to be trying to corner themselves:

Finally ID Canada is still promoting itself and looking to recruit young people as well as a suspicion they may be behind posters that where found in a Toronto neighborhood promoting the PPC based on their presence in the area and similarities with another one of their efforts few months back :

These three seemingly dissimilar cases (other than the fact they all involve racist groups) are interesting to me right now since they actually demonstrate a path for radicalization where a person moves from extremism to even greater extremism. A person this blog has been aware of but who I suspect is following a similar path of online radicalization by far-right extremist propaganda will be used as a bit of a case study:

The person pictured here is named Skyler François who lives in either Vancouver or Burnaby based on information found on his two LinkedIn profiles, one of which has him claiming to be a professional gamer:

Long time readers will no doubt recognize the flag behind François:

It is the same flag he is holding on his current Twitter profile:

Before I continue I need to explain that François' use @strobe88 on Twitter is relatively recent as he had been using @skyler_francois prior to at least May 2019:

I'm guessing Str0be is his gamer tag.

As such readers will notice both @skyler_francois and @strobe88 thought this article though the Str0be handle will be more common as most of the screen shots were taken after the change had occurred.

François has been on Twitter since 2013 when he would have been around Grade 10. Looking at what he posts on Twitter now one wouldn't be surprised to see that he would be someone whom ARC might take an interest in:

April 17, 2013 - August 23, 2014: Left of Center and Typical Teen Interests

However this wouldn't have been the case as recently as January 1, 2018. Prior to 2018 most of his tweets were related to video games, finding school boring, girls, and getting high with very few that were political in nature, however those few tweets that were political in nature suggest that François held very different views than he does now:

Based on other content and previous posts François would be in high school at this time (Grades 10 and 11).

August 24, 2014 - January 1, 2018: Gaming

Between August 2014 and January 1, 2018, almost every tweet and retweet made was completely apolitical in nature focusing primarily on gaming. The only exception I was able to find was a single tweet in November 2016 concerning the election of Donald Trump and the subsequent protests that took place which perhaps indicates a shift in François' views might have started as a result of the Trump presidential campaign and victory, though this is very much conjecture:

If a shift had started it wasn't apparent as the remainder of 2016 and 2017 was devoted to tweets and retweets about gaming pretty much exclusively:

That would all change almost immediately after ushering in 2018

January 2, 2018 - May 14, 2019: Falling Down the Alt-Right Rabbit Hole and ID Canada

The contrast is quite jarring, so much so that one would be excused for believing a completely different person took over François Twitter account on January 2, 2018.

While gaming seemed to be the most significant aspect of his social media identity prior to January 2, 2018, François hasn't tweeted or retweeted a single gaming related item since January 1, 2018. His Twitter feed became exclusively devoted to far-right political discourse; Lauren Southern, "InfoWars'" Paul Joseph Watson, Martin Sellner and Brittany Pettibone, "Breitbart", Faith Goldy, and other groups and individuals. He also began engaging with detractors and arguing in favor of white nationalism:

There was absolutely no indication or hint that this was going to happen based on his earlier social media activity. Since January 2, 2018, François' tweets have become increasingly extreme.

François first came to my attention through his association with ID Canada, a hate group that he started to promote himself as early as February 2018:

ID Canada was formerly Generation Identity Canada prior to rebranding. ARC has already published numerous articles about the group whose suspected leader (though there are questions regarding his involvement now) Tyler Hover was an active member of Stormfront and the branch in Montreal was a front for Alt-Right Montreal. The hate group was also actively involved in Faith Goldy's mayoral campaign (I've included a few relevant links):

It is this promotion of ID Canada that brought François to ARC's attention (before I promptly forgot about him again):

He also began to vigorously advocate for and promote the group when engaging with others on Twitter:

I'm not sure what François thinks he means by ID Canada as being "recognized by the government"?
Does he mean a charity? An NGO? Having a registered trademark? None of that is true. Maybe he
thinks that because ID Canada has been in the news (regarding their stickers at least) that constitutes
being "recognized" by the government? In any case I'll chalk it up to talking a big game.

Here François posts the usual line we've heard from identitarians. They aren't racists and they respect all cultures but they want to protect and preserve "white" culture which means limiting immigration however those POC who are here already are fine.

This line is expressed in even greater detail in another lengthy exchange in August 2018:

I don't think François needs to worry about anything especially profound
within ID Canada.... and yes I know he is guilty of a malapropism.
François is adamant here that neither he nor ID Canada is racist (despite his reference to the 14 words coined by convicted terrorist and white supremacist David Lane). He writes that he isn't a white supremacist, that he would never "kick anyone out", and that ID C Canada bans Nazi sympathizers or anyone holding (I'm guessing the work he means is "extremist") language.

Keep these statements in mind.

June 3, 2018 - August 7, 2018: Gab and Canadian Nationalist Party

During this time François also created a profile on Gab:

Gab is a social networking site established in 2016 that claims it supports nearly unrestricted free speech. In practice it has attracted extremists who have been kicked off other platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter among others. The demographics are primarily male, white, and far-right politically. Members include alt-right founder Richard Spencer, Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos, former BNP leader Nick Griffin, Blair Cottrell, and Christopher Cantwell among others. One of the more infamous members was the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter who murdered 11 people; he wrote on Gab shortly before engaging in the massacre"HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I'm going in."

François was active on Gab very briefly between June and August 2018, however he spent his time there promoting both ID Canada and Travis Patron's Canadian Nationalist Party:

I'm not sure that the profile picture was the one he originally chose for his Gab account, but it provides another example of a shift towards an even more extremist position.

By May 2019, François had come to embrace National Socialism and created what he believes is a political party:

May 15, 2019 - Present: Canadian Union of Fascists

However he would later change the name to that of a political party that existed briefly in Canada in the 1930s:

Despite what François believes, the Canadian Union of Fascists hasn't been recognized as an official party in this country since it was dissolved at the beginning of World War II and even at the time it existed it never attracted a significant membership or, as far as I'm aware, ran a candidate in a Canadian election under the CUF banner (Adrien Arcand's Parti National Social Chrétien was a much more significant movement during this period). Just because he claims the name doesn't mean that François is the automatic leader of a fringe political party dating to roughly 1933 which then ceased to exist around 1939. This is indicative of his lack of actual political insight and sophistication.

Since this time François has been retweeting his own CUF tweets as well as those of the PPC and overt racists like Donald Trump and Stefan Molyneux as well as a BC identitarian group Northern Identity, a group that I find very interesting in part because they blocked the ARC Twitter account moments after I followed them because OBVIOUSLY ARC is comprised of snowflakes.... I guess?

This marks a further escalation in the level of extremist rhetoric. Where once he suggested he wasn't a white supremacist and that Nazi sympathizers would be banned from membership in ID Canada he is now openly advocating for National Socialism in which the belief in racial superiority and antisemitism is at the core of the ideology:

I'll let the readers comment on the irony of a National Socialist
supporter claiming common cause with Slavic peoples.

And where he once claimed that non-white peoples were free to remain in Canada....

.... he now supports forcible deportation.

What's the next step beyond deportation? History sadly provides us with that answer.

And finally there is the issue of François advocating for and celebrating violence:

This is the part of looking at Skyler François that is the most concerning. Much of the imagery he's posting echos that which Patrik Mathews and members of the Base as well at Atomwaffen Division have disseminated. François also posted this video in which an individual is brutally assaulted which also mirrors the aesthetic:

Rather than see this for what it is, an unjustified assault, François and a few of the people following his CUF Twitter profile celebrate:

That's where we are now.

Conclusions?

So why bother looking at Skyler François at all? ARC's critics will rightfully argue that he isn't a significant figure on the Canadian far-right; he is fringe even amongst the fringe. There's no concern that he and his "political party" the Canadian Union of Fascists will be registered by Elections Canada, run a single candidate, or win even a tiny fraction of a single percentage of any vote. This is just yet another of ARC's long winded posts (hey, it's a wise man who knows himself and I KNOW that I can beat a dead horse into the ground).

In truth, that's exactly why I wrote this article.

François isn't special, but it is because he is completely nondescript that is why we need to pay attention to him and people like him. Through 2013 and 2017 there was no indication at all that he would have been radicalized. So what the hell happened to him and why did it seem like the flipping of a switch?

Was he radicalized through gaming? The election of Trump? Events offline and reinforced by online propaganda?

I honestly don't know.

Now me not knowing might not be a big deal. I'm not a psychologist and it isn't my job to know these things. However I fear that people whose job is to figure this out are not doing so. That might not be their fault as resources aren't likely being devoted to figuring out which young, white, male will be the next to turn to far-right extremism as much as they should be.

A brown male named Ali, Fahad, Imran, or Muhammad? Well that's an entirely different story. Those guys will be watched like hawks the moment they order a falafel rather than a ham sandwich in a diner.

No, François isn't special, but neither is he alone. I think it is in society's interest to figure out how he and others like him have turned out as they have if we want to prevent the violence this particular demographic has shown itself to be capable of.

The following video is one individual's story of how he was radicalized and his eventual rejection of the alt-right ideologies.

Brief Update on ARC's Skyler François Article

$

I've been taking a bit of a mental health break from both the blog and researching the groups and individuals who have found their way here by generally being awful. Believe it or not I've been spending much of it gardening. Today I completed a field stone circle ring around one of my trees in which, after the winter, I'll plant some Irish Moss and English Ivy and hope the two plants get along better than the Irish and English have historicall (or because, of Brexit, currently). Next weekend will be spent dehydrating my chili peppers and herbs; basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary. Then it will be time to winterize the yard and get ready for the first snowfall which I really hope won't occur until December at the earliest because as I get older I'm less inclined to enjoy shoveling snow while my feet and ears freeze.

After almost 12 years I thought I'd include a little slice of life element.

But I haven't been completely out of the loop.

The last article on the blog concerning the radicalization of a young man in British Columbia received a great deal of praise for which I'm very appreciative. My hope was that it might serve as a means to understand the process that takes place using this particular individual as a typical case.

Skyler François, the subject of the article, however didn't seem especially happy as he deleted both Twitter accounts and his Gab profile:

It isn't a surprise that he would have attempted to erase his online history despite it being a futile effort. He isn't the first to have done this after an ARC article and he won't be the last. He's also not the first to threaten ARC with legal action which he did as well:

This is that letter:

Sigh....

I almost never respond to these messages because, well, you all can see why. In this case however I decided to reply. This is the content of the email I sent to François (I'll also include some screen shots that I didn't send to him to further illustrate the point I'm making):
I wrestled a bit over whether or not to respond to this email. In the end I decided that I would since I believe there are things that need to be said.
Let's start with the "cease and desist" letter. This document is one of the worst attempts at legal intimidation I've seen in years and trust me when I tell you that I have been provided numerous laughable examples for more than a decade. Let's break it down, shall we?
  1. A real document would include a letterhead stating the name of the law firm as well as the firm's address, phone number, website, and email address.
  2. The document would be signed by the attorney taking on the case whose name would be stated clearly in the document; it would NOT state that it is coming from some vague and nameless, "legal team."
  3. The person crafting the document would be sure to capitalize the name of his or her client. The use of the word "clients" at one point should contain an apostrophe since it denotes possession (ie: "client's rights" rather than "clients rights"). Also, "uptowards" is not an actual word in the English language.... or any other language than I'm currently aware of.
There are more issues with the mechanics of the letter and your attempt at using legal jargon, but I feel I've made my point.
Now let's discuss the faulty logic behind the fake legal threat. Everything I wrote about you was based on information that you posted online yourself. If I could find it anyone, including future prospective employers who now make a habit of checking online for information about potential employees, can find it as well. Once it is online, your posts are for all intents and purposes public domain. I would further note that you claimed to be the head of a political party. While we might argue about the veracity of said claim, if it were to be accepted then that claim would make you a public figure which would also make you someone for whom a political critique would be warranted.

Regarding the suggestion that ARC is engaged in a "pattern of harassment" by pointing to a single, though incredibly well sourced, blog article featuring public statements made by the subject of the article and analysis of said statements, well.... none of this would be considered to be harassment in any way, shape, or form by any court in the country.
The beauty of Canadian tort law is that the person who loses the case pays costs for both the parties especially if it is perceived as vexatious and without merit. Being made uncomfortable by your own words is not grounds to sue and you would not like the outcome of such a case should it be pursued.
More important to me than the threat to ARC implied by your letter however is the rank hypocrisy in your letter. You complain about emotional distress and that you should "remain free from harassment." I would note that at no time do I suggest that anyone harass or harm you, however based on your own posts on Twitter you were very happy harassing others, celebrating violence committed against others, and creating fear in others when you thought you could do so with impunity.

Your attempt now to hide all of this by deleting the two Twitter accounts that I am aware of as well as your Gab profile is now sort of like closing the barn door once the horses have escaped. You may be young but at 22 but you are an adult and fully responsible for your words and actions. You need to live with the consequences of what you have written now and no amount of trying to escape from those consequences will change that fact.
I always hold out hope for people like you though. You are young and it certainly isn't too late for you to go down a different path than the one you are on now. At the start of the article I posted a number of resources for those whose loved ones are being radicalized. I would urge you to contact someone who might be able to get you off this path because it never leads anywhere good.
Yours,
Anti-Racist Canada

I'm not sure if François will respond to my reply, but if he does and if it contains anything relevant I'll update this post.

Far Right Infighting Part ∞ + 2: Chris Vanderweide Bites A Hand That Fed Him

Alternate title? "Everyone I Don't Like is a Libtard Antifa!"

For the remainder of his life, Chris Vanderweide will be known as the guy who sucker punched people attending a Pride event in Hamilton and wildly swinging a helmet while wearing what looked to be ill-fitting paint ball gear. This was followed up by his participation in a pre-meditated assault that took place after a poorly attended Pegida rally in a Toronto mall.

Now while this isn't the way I, or probably most others with a reasonable amount of self-respect and dignity would like to be remembered, Vanderweide doesn't seem to have had many affirming moments in his life and when the conspiracy theory-supporting anti-immigrant/Muslim/POC/LGBTQ crowd proclaimed him as their hero for carrying out the assaults they had dreamed about doing themselves online, he was all too willing to accept that praise while also engaging in a whole heap of shameless self-promotion and attempted monetization:

Now, fame amongst the fringe, far-right, Yellow Vesters and "patriot" hatriot crowd (I'm stealing that term from Yellow Vests Canada Exposed who were the first I heard coin it to describe these groups) is admittedly an extremely niche.... uhm.... honor? Is honor the right word to use?

In any case, despite still not being anyone actually important, Vanderweide soon began speaking of himself as bigger than the hatriot movement itself and quickly began to alienate former supporters and fans.

That alienation has continued.

This past Sunday Vanderweide decided to again brag about his importance and the insignificance of those groups that preceded him. Some didn't take especially kindly with him minimizing their efforts and, later, themselves personally. The following is a very, very, long group of (we'll say) discussions that occurred on his wall (four in total). Topics include the bail money that was raised, what he spent it on, his general lack of gratitude, allegations of fraud, criticism about the assault, and posturing over who is an alpha male and who is a beta cuck because.... you know.... these are grown men.

So sit back, grab a drink, and enjoy the program:

The CNP Eligible For Official Party Status Part I: This Article is the Teaser. ;)

If you'd like to see what ARC and YVCE are planning for the next blog post and you don't mind spoilers, feel free to scroll to the end of this article. Then come back and read through the rest. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

By the end of August Travis Patron's efforts to have his far-right Canadian Nationalist Party recognized as an actual officially recognized party appears to have come to fruition:
Elections Canada sent party leader Travis Patron a letter on Thursday. It confirmed the party met the requirements for eligibility under the Canada Elections Act and can be registered for the upcoming election if the writs of election are issued on Sept. 9 or later.
Even then, the party is still not actually registered. It must still endorse a candidate, whose candidacy then must be confirmed by a returning officer. Patron says he will run under the party banner in the southeast Saskatchewan riding of Souris—Moose Mountain.
If readers click on the link they will note in the article there is mention of a plan to publicize the identities of those who supported the party’s Elections Canada application. Know that we WILL get back to this. In fact it will be the primary focus of the second article.

It shouldn't be a surprise to learn that Patron is very pleased:

Patron himself will be running in Souris-Moose Mountain in Saskatchewan (a Saskatchewan mountain???) and appears to be the only CNP candidate running in the 2019 federal election though this sad fact hasn't dampened his enthusiasm:

The fly in the ointment for Patron, as I've already alluded to, is that he and members of his newly minted official party are terrified of having their membership revealed:

I stress once again that we will absolutely be addressing this in the second article (if you AREN'T a CNP member or supporter, you are REALLY going to like it).

The CNP Eligible For Official Party Status Part II: The List

Anti-Racist Canada and Yellow Vests Canada Exposed are publishing over 250 names of members of newly registered Canadian Nationalist Party.

The Canadian Nationalist Party, a neo-Nazi party led by Travis Patron, became eligible to become a registered federal party on August 29th. Today, we’re publishing the names of over 250 confirmed party members.

Having learned their information would become accessible through public documents released by Elections Canada, some Canadian Nationalist Party supporters took the opportunity to learn more about Patron and renounce their support. Others reaffirmed their support, and will now face the social consequences of supporting a neo-Nazi party.

We are providing information about these Canadian Nationalist Party members to journalists across the country and encouraging them to write stories naming neo-Nazi party supporters in their communities. This information has been confirmed by Elections Canada as part of their process and we have rechecked it ourselves. Questionable data has been removed.

To be very clear: we are only encouraging a nonviolent social response and that’s why we are only publishing names and cities of residence. We trust that friends, families, employers, and other members of the community will make it clear that their support for the Canadian Nationalist Party is absolutely unacceptable.

This is NOT doxxing. Doxxing is making extensive private information public to encourage and enable threats and violence. What we are doing is journalism. We are publishing public information - and just names and cities - to hold these individuals socially accountable to their community. This information is available to any Canadian through Elections Canada just like regularly released information about political donors. Members of the Canadian Nationalist Party voluntarily disclosed this information, and will now face the social consequences.

Canadians have a right to know if there are neo-Nazis - because that’s what you call card carrying members of a neo-Nazi party - in their communities.

Travis Patron is under RCMP investigation for his video which references common antisemitic tropes, refers to Jewish people as “the parasitic tribe” and calls for them to be “removed once and for all” from Canada. He later explains that he was referring to the Zionist Occupied Government, a reference to the neo-Nazi conspiracy theory that Jews secretly control the government. On Facebook, Patron likes antisemitic quotes by George Lincoln Rockwell, founder of the American Nazi Party. He also refers to himself as a “historical revisionist,” which is what holocaust deniers prefer to call themselves.

The party also targets other communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community, which was attacked during Hamilton Pride by a coalition of hate preachers, Yellow Vests, and Canadian Nationalist Party members in June.

William John Beattie, leader of the Canadian Nazi Party (1965-1978), also supports Patron and has encouraged him to post “It’s Okay To Be White” posters. Paul Fromm, the infamous Canadian neo-Nazi networker and supporter of Blood & Honour, a designated terrorist group, is a member.
Other notable members include KevinJohnston, Jody Issel, and Rev. Russell A. Haynes.
Patron knew that this information would become public and threw his members under the bus. He used a fake address for himself, while exposing all of their information.
Travis Patron will say he isn’t a neo-Nazi and that his party isn’t a neo-Nazi party. He will say that we’re encouraging violence. It shouldn’t come as any surprise that neo-Nazis are liars.
Patron is running for election in the riding of Souris – Moose Mountain in Saskatchewan.

There will be a lot of names that readers won't recognize, but here are a few that are of special interest.

We've already mentioned these two neo-Nazis, long time white supremacist Paul Fromm who actively promoted and supported members of an now banned terrorist group and Jody Issel who was one time head of the Moose Jaw chapter of Soldiers of Odin as well as a participant in at least one Blood & Honour rally in Calgary:

Also on the list is Kevin J Johnston, a notorious Islamophobe charged and awaiting trail for violating Canadian hate crime laws and who was recently hit with a $2.5 million defamation judgement:

Another interesting figure is Darik Horn who worked on Faith Goldy's mayoral campaign and who has been seen working as security at a number of Max Bernier's PPC events:

Though he hasn't been mentioned on the blog, Reverend Russell Haynes has been a contributing writer for the virulently anti-immigrant Immigration Watch Canada as well as the Council of European Canadians founded by Ricardo Duchesne:

And we'll finish with Travis Patron himself. We're leaving his address because it isn't his home address but the registered address the CNP possessed at One Yonge St. until Telsec cancelled their service:
